У Джеймса Джойса был прекрасный тенор, и в молодые годы он выступал с пением ирландских
песен и баллад. Позднее он увлекся английской мадригальной поэзией и музыкой XVI-го века —
Доуландом, Бёрдом и другими елизаветинцами. В 1904 году он даже намеревался предпринять
гастрольную поездку по югу Англии с лютней и соответствующим старинным репертуаром.
Песни Джойса возникли как подражание любимым образцам. Он исполнял их, импровизируя
задумчивые аккорды на рояле или на гитаре. Он всегда желал, чтобы эти стихотворения были
положены на музыку, и его желания вполне сбылись. Многие композиторы не устояли перед
искушением «Камерной музыки» Джойса.
