Пускай же свет вечерний солнца,
что садится, в сарая щели светит
между тюками сена.
Пускай сверчки стрекочут,
пусть из волос девчонка вынимает
солому и иголки. Пусть вечер наступает.
Пускай роса осядет на брошенной мотыге,
лежащей на траве. Пусть звёзды засияют
и месяц рог свой кажет в высокой синеве.
Пускай лиса в нору вернётся.
Пусть вовсе стихнет ветер. Пусть в хлеве
потемнеет. И пусть наступит вечер.
Бутылка что в канаве, забытая лопата,
лежащая в овсе... Пусть воздух полной грудью,
Пусть вечер наступает.
Пусть он придёт, когда захочет, -
его не испугаюсь. Ведь Бог нас не оставит,
без ласки и любви. Пусть вечер наступает.

Jane Kenyon was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1947. During her lifetime she published four books of poetry: “Constance” (Graywolf Press, 1993), “Let Evening Come” (Graywolf Press, 1990), “The Boat of Quiet Hours” (Graywolf Press, 1986), and “From Room to Room” (Alice James Books, 1978), as well as a book of translation, “Twenty Poems of Anna Akhmatova” (Ally Press, 1985).

Let the light of late afternoon
shine through chinks in the barn, moving
up the bales as the sun moves down.
Let the cricket take up chafing
as a woman takes up her needles
and her yarn. Let evening come.
Let dew collect on the hoe abandoned
in long grass. Let the stars appear
and the moon disclose her silver horn.
Let the fox go back to its sandy den.
Let the wind die down. Let the shed
go black inside. Let evening come.
To the bottle in the ditch, to the scoop
in the oats, to air in the lung
let evening come.
Let it come, as it will, and don’t
be afraid. God does not leave us
comfortless, so let evening come.
